A few minutes later a fleet of police cars arrives with lights and sirens
blaring, just like in the Blues Brothers, and this clearly upsets the
creature. It bolts down the road, shaking the earth and squashing squad
cars with every step, until it disappears into the trees in the direction
of downtown Mount Vernon.
I desperately want to drive
after it and see what happens but my car is smashed, and the road is
blocked with others like it. I have to catch a ride in the back of a cop
car, and it takes us an hour to get back. By the time we arrive, the
creature has crushed a few downtown businesses but the damage is light,
and the creature has already been brought down by a S.W.A.T team with
high-tech weapons not yet known to the public. It lies in the center of
Main Street, as dead as King Kong.
The creature is in every
headline for a few months, as scientists study it and are caught
completely without explanation. Its DNA does not appear related to any
species or phyla in the known animal kingdom. Neither can anyone explain
where it came from, or how it suddenly appeared deep in a populated area
without anyone noticing it until my 911 call. Rational people are
outraged, and only grudgingly allow it to be mentioned in school
curriculum-- as a flat-out anomaly.
For a while I feel sad for the
creature, wondering if maybe he appeared to me because he trusted me and
wanted to befriend me and I let him down, but then I remind myself that
the first thing it did was smash my car, and I sleep better.
